The Australian Association for Jewish Studies (AAJS) and the ACT Jewish Community

2021 AAJS Annual Conference:

Jews As Active Citizens: Past and Present

to be held in person in the nation’s capital at the

ACT Jewish Community Centre, 31 National Circuit, Forrest ACT

and also available for virtual participation online,

throughout Sunday 28 February and Monday 1 March 2021.

 

Join the Australian Association for Jewish Studies (AAJS) and the ACT Jewish Community for a conference exploring questions of Jewish status, membership, belonging, and political participation across disparate societies and historical contexts. Click on aajs2021.sched.com to view our full and exciting program. 
 
Registration is crucial for both online participation and for those able to attend in person in Canberra. The registration fee provides access to the full program, as well as session recordings after the conference, allowing participants to come in and out of the conference and attend sessions of their choice. In person registration also includes lunch, morning and afternoon tea, and a cocktail reception each evening.
 
In person participants must register by Sunday 21 February for catering and COVID safety purposes.
 
 
Accommodation
For those who will be joining us in person – the ACT Jewish Community Centre (31 National Circuit, Forrest) is within walking distance of many hotels:
*   Immediately across the road (30 National Circuit) is the Forrest Hotel and Apartments
*   On the closest cross road with Canberra Avenue (17 National Circuit), 1-2 minute away is Rydges Canberra.
*   Just a little further down National Circuit, 5 minute walk from the Centre is The Realm Hotel.
*   A further option is The East Hotel, a 10 minute walk from the Centre.

THE VISIT TO THE NATIONAL LIBRARY OF AUSTRALIA

Sunday 28 February 6:30 - 7:30pm

The ACT Jewish Community, Australian Jewish Historical Society and Australian Association of Jewish Studies invites members of the ACT Jewish Community and Canberrans to join the conference reception and tour at the National Library of Australia on Sunday 28 February 6:30-7:30pm.

Participation is included in full conference registration. Otherwise, registration cost for just this event:
ACTJC members – $5.00
Non-members – $7.50

Please register by Sunday 21 February to secure a place.
 
 

 

IN CONVERSATION WITH AUSTRALIA'S JEWISH PARLIAMENTARIANS 

The last session of the 2021 Australian Association of Jewish Studies Conference https://aajs2021.sched.com  being held online and in-person at the ACT Jewish Community, 31 National Circuit, Forrest will be on Monday 1st March 2021 – 6:00pm to 7:00pm.

In that discussion, Professor Kim Rubenstein will talk to three Jewish members of Parliament about the significance of their Jewish identity to their role as Parliamentarians. What does active Jewish citizenship constitute for these MPs? Did their Jewishness impact on their decision to enter politics? Does their Jewish identity affect their working lives? Do other Jewish Australians benefit from their presence in Parliament?

This session can be attended as a stand-alone part of the 2021 conference is free.
