Bnei Mitzvah Program

Our bnei mitzvah program meets on Sundays during the ACT school terms from 9.30-11.30am. Students age 11-14 engage in a range of skill-building and social activities, including tefillah, team-building games, and communication activities, followed by a program of learning led by diverse role models from within and beyond the ACT Jewish community. The program is open to all genders, denominations, affiliations, and levels of experience/knowledge. Parents are encouraged to join particular sessions throughout the year.

The program equips students with key skills required to participate in all aspects of Jewish life, and gives them the ability to contribute to and establish a Jewish home according to their own practices. We explore a range of ways to connect to and express Jewish identity in its many forms, encouraging each individual to develop a personal relationship to Judaism as well as have innate respect for Jewish difference and diversity. Social interaction and having fun are important goals of the program alongside its educational initiatives.

Our curriculum is based around the following focus areas:
Community and family
Wellbeing, personal growth, values
Culture
Rites of passage
Jewish essentials
Tzedakah, social justice, social action
Shabbatons, outings

The program also provides a foundation for individual learning towards a bnei mitzvah ceremony in either the orthodox or progressive congregation, which is tailored to the individual students interests and skills. Information on individual ceremonies may be found under our bnei mitzvah policy; those anticipating a celebration should contact the ACTJC Office for advice at least six months before their planned ceremony date.

After the bnei mitzvah program we offer CaTZ, a youth group for 5-12 year olds. Bnei mitzvah students who stay for CaTZ are served a light kosher lunch. Those age 13-14 are encouraged to stay for CaTZ to train as youth leaders and assist in running activities for our youngest CaTZ participants.
