The ACT Jewish Community (ACTJC) is an incorporated association under the ACT Associations Incorporation Act 1991.
The ACTJC is as a registered charity with the Australian Charities and not-for-Profit Commission.
It is home to both Orthodox and Progressive Congregations and is the centre of cultural, social and educational programs for all Jewish people in Canberra.
The membership period is 1 July to 30 June and membership fees must be paid by the nominated deadline.
All applicants must agree to abide by the ACTJC Constitution and policies as amended from time to time.
Application Process:
Applicants for membership will go through a vetting process prior to their applications being considered by the Board of Management.
The Board may contact persons who can attest to the applicant’s claims. The applicant will be advised of the outcome of the Board’s consideration. Membership of the ACTJC is contingent on payment of the applicable annual membership fee. Membership fees are pro-rated according to the date on which the membership application is approved by the Board.
Membership Categories:
1. Ordinary Member - Family / Single / Student / Unwaged / Concessional:
A person who is Jewish and who is at least 18 years old may apply to become an ordinary member. An ordinary member must pay an annual membership fee. Ordinary members who are financial may vote at ACTJC meetings and stand for office.
A family membership can include a non-Jewish partner as an associate member.
2. Associate Member
A person who is not Jewish may apply to become an associate member if the person has a substantive reason for wishing to join the ACTJC (such as having a Jewish partner). 3. Diplomatic Member:
A member of the Diplomatic Corps may apply to become an associate member. A diplomatic member is not liable to pay an annual membership fee and cannot vote at ACTJC meetings or stand for office.
Membership Fees - 1 July 2020 to 30 June 2021:
Family - $735
Single - $450
Associate - $285
Concessional - $87
Please note: To qualify for a concessional membership -
a) pensioners must present a current Centrelink or Veterans’ concession card;
b) Students present a current student ID.
c) Unwaged persons will be contacted by the Treasurer.
Discounts: New ordinary members receive a 20% discount on the annual membership fee for the first two years of membership. Members under 30 who are not students receive a 50% discount on the annual membership fee per year Only one discount is applied, whichever is the greatest.
