Interested in becoming a member of the ACT Jewish Community?

We offer you a vibrant, engaged and growing group of friendly and welcoming people, as well as an array of cultural, social and educational programs for all Jewish people, both religious and secular, in the region.

Unlike other Australian cities, Canberra is small and different and so is our very own Jewish community. In larger cities, communities tend to form around different synagogues. By contrast, our Jewish community brings everyone together under one roof to serve the religious and cultural interests of our community across the full spectrum of Jewish identity.

The ACTJC is more than a synagogue or a religious centre. While we provide for religious needs through Orthodox and Progressive services, our breadth of cultural activities and social events are major attractions rivaling the quality of those of larger Jewish communities.

As in the broader ACT community, the membership of the ACTJC is very diverse. There are probably as many different ways of feeling, displaying and debating being Jewish as there are Jews.

We welcome all opinions and suggestions to help us improve the organisation.

Some attractions of being a financial member of the ACT Jewish Community are:

Making new friends

New to Canberra or finding it had to expand your friendship network? Community organisations are well known as being great places to meet like-minded people. By joining the ACTJC you have a ready-made group of friends who will look out for you, and share the same cultural heritage and commitment to our community.

Be a decision maker

As a financial member, you can vote at ACTJC General Meetings, including to elect other financial members to the Board of Management. You will also be able to contribute to the development of the ACTJC’s strategic priorities and current and future operations. Engagement is in your control.

Learn about and contribute to Jewish Learning and Culture

As a member of the ACT Jewish Community, you will have a range of choices to contribute to the strengthening of Jewish learning and culture. We also provide opportunities for representative duties in a variety of forums, including interfaith, multicultural and interstate activities.

Expand your interests - join a committee

You may have a particular interest, passion or skill that will benefit one or more of our special committees. Your contribution to our committees will be invaluable in helping our community to grow and develop.

There is plenty to do - volunteer!

Looking for something to do as a retiree, family or new to Canberra? Volunteering your skills, thoughts and/or muscle is a great way to get to know your fellow members and learn how the ACTJC works. All members are encouraged to volunteer and help at functions.

It’s good for your health

Studies show that having a good social network extends your life, keeps you healthy, and staves off mental deterioration. Your fellow members may become lifelong friends and will be there for you in times of need. The ACTJC also provides extra support to members in need or crisis through our Jewish Care program.

Lifelong learning - free resources

The ACTJC receives printed magazines, books and educational resources from a variety of sources. Only members are able to borrow books from the Library. For the convenience of others, reference publications cannot be removed from the Centre without the permission of the Librarian and/or office staff.

Save with discounted tickets to ACTJC run events

Financial members receive discounted tickets to all of our events, activities and educational courses. These discounts can add up to a significant saving throughout the year. As a member, you will also receive advance notice of any upcoming activities via our mail-out channels.

No cost for hall hire for a private function

If you have a private function and need a venue, you may use any of the Centre’s room without charge. Event bookings must be done through the office. Modest fees will be charged to provide security and cleanup for your event.

Bakery orders

As a member, our Office Managers are happy to place bakery orders for you whenever they are arranging a delivery of challah, kosher pies, pita bread, cakes, slices, and bagels. No order is done for non-members.

Access to worker’s car park

If you work at one of the nearby departments or businesses during the week, we will endeavour to allocate a parking space (when they become available) to new members at the same rate charged to general members of the public. The advantage of ACTJC membership is that members can receive priority on the waiting list. Parking spaces around the area hard to find and are highly prized by those lucky enough to get one.

Our website

The ACTJC website address is www.actjc.org.au. The website has a number of member-only pages and access is enabled when membership is approved by the Board of Management.

Our mailing list

We send out electronic communications weekly and on an 'as needs basis' so you are kept up to date with what's going on.  There are closed group mailouts for members only.

Our weekly newsletter Grapevine

Grapevine is published weekly on a Thursday and includes information about the upcoming services, functions and regular groups as well as articles by our Rabbi.   Members are welcome to contribute notices to each newsletter for free. Archived copies are available to members only.

Our quarterly magazine HaMerkaz (Hebrew for ‘The Centre’)

The ACTJC publishes its popular magazine HaMerkaz throughout the year. This stimulating publication combines opinions, reflections, and forward-looking articles from a diverse range of writers. It also includes many photos from our recent events and provides a wonderful way of tracking the history of the community. Members are invited to contribute about one month prior to publication. HaMerkaz is distributed electronically to members and members may purchase a printed copy (for a small charge).
