ACTJC Rabbi and Rabbanit

Rabbi David and Rabbanit Mili Leitner Cohen

Rabbi David and Rabbanit Mili Leitner Cohen commenced working for the ACTJC in August 2021, bringing with them their daughter Eliana. They previously lived in Jerusalem and Chicago, with David’s early years spent in Brooklyn and Jerusalem, and Mili’s in London and rural France. Sharing the rabbinical role between them, the Leitner Cohens are a modern orthodox family with a deep commitment to halachahic integrity and intellectual openness.

Rabbi David Leitner Cohen received his rabbinical ordination from Kollel Chukim Chachamim in Jerusalem under Rav Elisha Ancselovitz. He is also working on his PhD in Modern Jewish thought at the University of Chicago Divinity School, which deals with the interactions and intellectual history of Jewish neo-orthodox thinkers with modern European philosophy. He holds an M.A. degree in religious studies from the University of Chicago Divinity School and a B.A. in philosophy and political science from the Hebrew University of Jerusalem. Rabbi David is interested in halachah’s origins as a form of Jewish wisdom that expresses and resolves everyday needs and conflicts, and in contemporary applications that are true to both the letter and the spirit of halachah.

Rabbanit Mili Leitner Cohen studied in the Pardes Institute’s Kollel for two years. She is a certified shohetet u'vodeket (slaughter of kosher meat). She has particular interests in childhood and adult education, women, gender, and sexuality in halachah, and tefillah. She is completing a PhD in Jewish liturgy at the University of Chicago and works for Musica Judaica, the Jewish music journal. Rabbanit Mili has been published in various academic journals and received numerous prizes for her academic work, which bridges western liberal and traditional halachic epistemologies.
