Monday, 15 July, 2019 12 Tammuz 5779

6:00 PM - 7:30 PM

'Hebrew and Zionism make love' lecture aims to observe Israel from a linguistic perspective, focusing on the following prospects:

1) Discuss the history of the Hebrew language, its mutual contribution to Zionism, and explore how Hebrew, despite a 2,000 years 'lingual outcasting', came to be the language spoken by 8 million people in Israel and around the globe.

2) Observe the formation of a 'Hebrew Identity' - political efforts to make Hebrew the language spoken by the newly-recognized Israeli nation. In this context, we will be looking at promotion materials published by the Hebrew Yishuv, Zionist press and the newborn Israeli government to encourage the hegemonic use of Hebrew as the national language.

3) Learn some common practices / features of the modern Hebrew language that may suggest certain perception / states of mind of Hebrew speakers (eg gender, possessive casing, root system, etiquette, etc.)

4) Look at the influence of, and the relationship with, Arabic as a language with a 'special status' in Israel (as per the nation-state bill) on modern Hebrew, as well as other languages spoken by certain communities in Israel.
