The Jews of India and ‘Synagogues of India - Journeys in Watercolours’
Angelica Jacob, President of the Sydney Chapter of the Indian Jewish Association of Australia & New Zealand will speak about the Jews of India who flourished without persecution in the sub-continent for more than 1,800 years. Some forty structures constructed as synagogues can be found in India today, some dating from the sixteenth century, varying in design, scale and appointments. At its height, India’s Jewish population numbered approximately 35,000 in 1954, and made significant contributions to Indian life in art, literature, science, engineering, the armed forces and Government services.
The talk will be accompanied by an exhibition ‘Journeys in Watercolours – Synagogues of India’ which showcases images of the original paintings by Prof. Jay A. Waronker PhD.
