Judith Levitan will be presenting a session for women on the laws of family purity – Taharat Hamishpacha

Judith Levitan is the Manager, Client Service at Legal Aid NSW where she brings the voice of the client to strategic planning around designing legal services for people who are socially and economically disadvantaged. She has worked for the last 12 years in the social justice sector as a lawyer, community legal educator and project manager. Prior to that she worked as a lawyer in a top tier commercial law firm.

She holds degrees in Law and Social Work from the University of NSW. Her honours thesis in social work examined community attitudes to domestic violence in the Orthodox Jewish community.

She is a founding member of the Jewish Alliance Against Domestic Violence, a voluntary organisation of women who sought to raise awareness about domestic violence and respectful relationships in the Sydney Jewish Community.

She has represented the NSW Jewish Community at various interfaith events.

Judith has undertaken tertiary studies at Jewish seminaries in Israel and is currently studying for Rabbinic ordination at Yeshivat Maharat, a Modern Orthodox Institution ​in New York that ordains Orthodox women to become community leaders. She is an active member of the Sydney Women’s Tefilah Group that seeks to maximise women’s participation in prayer and ritual and she also prepares girls for their batmitzvah.

Judith is interested in the intersection of Jewish law and feminism.
